Different species benefit from Metasys zoo system
A zoo is really no different from a home or office building. Everybody has an idea about the perfect environment. The chimps want the temperature one way. The crocodiles always want it warmer. And the elephants constantly complain about the air quality—seems their noses are really sensitive. So it’s vitally important that a zoo’s building management systems are up to the task.
When Zoo Leipzig in Leipzig, Germany, needed to maintain precise control over its buildings, outbuildings and exhibits, it turned to Johnson Controls and the highly adaptable Metasys® building automation system.
Johnson Controls has been working with Zoo Leipzig for more than 10 years. During that time, Johnson Controls has installed systems that ensure that both visitors and residents alike are comfortable and secure.
Here are just a couple of examples:
At the zoo, all new additional systems are integrated into the Metasys building automation system, using 32 DX-9100 controllers at the field level to control the heating, air conditioning and ventilation facilities. Then, the field level data is linked to an intelligent network via five automation stations. Metasys workstations perform data analysis and systems monitoring at the management level. And, all alerts can be routed via text message or phone calls to operators. Which makes those finicky elephants very, very happy.

Mimicking Habitats
The Metasys system allows users to control a variety of building functions, like air handling systems, lighting, security and other utility monitoring, using the building’s internal computer and communications infrastructure or over the Web. By using the Metasys system, Zoo Leipzig is afforded state-of-the-art monitoring and facilities control while ensuring that animal exhibits mimic natural habitats. And in some cases, re-creating those realistic climates pushes the limits of technology and creativity.Here are just a couple of examples:
- In the primate house, the roof is made of a three-layer film with two vacuum chambers. Then, building automation provides for a pleasant indoor climate because stale air is circulated out via vacuums.
- A nearby stream supplies water to the zoo by way of processing at a water treatment and conditioning plant on-site. The Metasys system continuously monitors the treatment plant, ensuring safety and security.
A Sense of Security
Because some exhibits require precise conditions—or the inhabitants could perish—the Metasys system provides a greater sense of security. For example, the system architecture enables zoo personnel to continuously monitor the conditions of all technical systems, immediately locating any faults or interruptions.
